FAQ

Yes — and we do it regularly across Whitefish, Kalispell, and the Flathead Valley. Winter work is

common in Montana, but it requires additional measures:

  • Ground thawing before excavation
  • Heated enclosures or insulated blankets for concrete placement and curing
  • Careful aggregate and water temperature management for concrete mix
  • Extended cure monitoring in cold conditions

Winter work adds cost and complexity, but it keeps projects on schedule and is often necessary for commercial or time-sensitive builds. We’ll be upfront about what’s required and what it adds to the budget.

Retaining walls are common on sloped lots throughout the Flathead Valley — especially on hillside parcels near Whitefish and in areas where building pads need to be cut into a slope. You need a retaining wall when you’re creating a grade change that soil alone can’t hold, whether for a driveway, a building pad, a yard terrace, or erosion control.

A properly built retaining wall in Montana requires both careful excavation and structural work with rock or concrete. The process involves:

  • Excavating the base and establishing a solid, level footing of gravel base. Depending on site and structural requirements this could extend to below frost depth (42″–48″ in the Flathead Valley)
  • Placing a compacted gravel base to ensure drainage behind and below the wall
  • Installing the wall — stacked rock, Gabian baskets, poured concrete, CMU block, or engineered systems depending on height and load
  • Proper backfill with drainable material (not clay) and geotechnical fabric to prevent fines migration
  • Installing drainage behind the wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure — this is critical in Montana’s wet seasons
  • Walls over 4′ typically require terracing and some degree of a setback in Montana. If this is tied into the architectural or structural plans, we can help coordinate with a structural engineer when required.

Please note that materials are not included in that price.

Rock walls are priced two ways- by the linear foot for production and by square footage at the face. Often a combination is used to calculate the amount of stone needed for a project and the other based on production speed of the operator and machine. We price our rock stacking by the square foot and our prices run at $42.50 – $50.00. The range accounts for factors such as material (size, square or round edges) and construction details. The higher end includes details like steps, drainage, or custom planters built into the hardscape.

We work with local quarries throughout the Flathead Valley to bring you the best prices, colors and materials for your project.
